Opeyemi M. Owolabi

Opeyemi Michael Owolabi is a seasoned Nigerian legal practitioner with core expertise in litigation and dispute resolution, alongside a strong footprint in commercial law, copyright, constitutional law, property law, human rights, debt recovery, and regulatory compliance. He has represented clients across all courts of record in Nigeria, offering cutting-edge legal solutions to complex matters spanning both public and private sectors.

Opeyemi is a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, where he earned a Second Class Upper degree in Law. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in October 2015 after completing his studies at the Nigerian Law School. He has obtained his Master of Law (LL.M) from the Obafemi Awolowo University.

Throughout his career, Opeyemi has been involved in high-profile legal representations. He was part of the legal team that successfully defended the election victories of the President of Nigeria, a sitting Governor, and several National Assembly members. He has also served as lead counsel in landmark entertainment law disputes, notably defending A-list Afrobeat artistes in defamation and copyright breach matters. Notably, in 2018, he successfully recovered ₦500 million in court for unauthorized broadcast and performance of copyrighted music works on behalf of the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON).

Opeyemi Owolabi has represented Clients in several complex commercial, criminal, debt recovery, Insolvency cases up to the Supreme Court of Nigeria. He also  offered advisory services to several clients in related Commercial Transactions, Agreements, Corporate Governance, Regulatory, Insolvency, Insurance, Banking, Intellectual Property, Aviation, Tax and Real Estate laws.

As a public interest and human rights advocate, Opeyemi has pursued groundbreaking litigation both locally and internationally. In 2021, he represented the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) at the ECOWAS Court of Justice in the matter challenging the suspension of Twitter in Nigeria—a case that resulted in a major ruling affirming the right to freedom of expression. He also represented Amnesty International in the same court, providing an amicus curiae brief concerning the violation of protesters’ rights during the #EndSARS demonstrations. He has filed several other impactful suits challenging government overreach, promoting voter rights, defending the Freedom of Information Act, and opposing controversial sections of CAMA 2020.

In addition to litigation, Opeyemi is an accomplished legal advisor to both domestic and international corporate clients. He has prepared legal memos, opinions, and complaints for submission to international bodies including the United Nations, ECOWAS, and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

He holds professional certifications in Privacy Law and Data Protection (University of Pennsylvania), Project Management and Monitoring & Evaluation (Ernst & Young), Compliance Programs, and International Humanitarian Law (University of Leiden).

Opeyemi is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and an active participant in its Section on Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL). Outside the courtroom, he enjoys public speaking, sports, and travel.
